DBT (Managing your emotions)

DBT focuses on learning new skills to manage emotions and decrease conflict in relationships.

There are four main concepts:

  • Mindfulness – To be mindful is about being present in the moment. To allow yourself not to focus on any other thoughts than the ones needed at that moment. To not judge your thoughts, focus on past/future thoughts, or allow yourself to ruminate.

  • Distress Tolerance – Is about developing skills to help you get through situations that are difficult or impossible to change. They are used to help us cope and survive during stressful times such as distraction or problem solving.

  • Emotional Regulation – Learn to understand and manage your negative and overwhelming emotions.

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness – To have the skills necessary for healthy relationships such as assertive communication, healthy boundaries, etc.
