  • CBT (Managing your thoughts):
    • Focuses on how your thoughts trigger your emotions and in the end impact your behavior.
    • You will gain insight into your thoughts and learn how questioning them can change unhelpful patterns of emotions and behaviors.
    • The goal is to change patterns of thinking, to change the way you feel and behave.
    • It’s about stopping the intrusive, worrisome, and negative thoughts that occur, to increase self-efficacy.

  • DBT (Managing your emotions):
    • Focuses on learning skills to manage difficult emotions and decrease conflict in relationships.
    • There are four main concepts:
      • Mindfulness
      • Distress Tolerance
      • Emotional Regulations
      • Interpersonal Effectiveness

  • Relaxation techniques:
    • Can help with stress, anxiety, and sleep
    • There are various techniques such as breathing, progressive muscle, guided imagery, utilizing a mantra, etc.

  • Behavioral Therapy:
    • Focuses on changing behaviors, which could lead to changes in thoughts and feelings.
    • The goal is to increase positive interactions.
    • With ADHD, it can help increase self esteem and control with the following technique:
      • Role Playing — Developing social skills and learning to anticipate issues that may come up while in social interactions. We could play out certain scenarios that have or could occur socially. (Impulse control and emotional regulation).
      • Behavior Modification (work on together, but utilize at home) — Developing reward systems for needs that have been identified such as following through, positive behaviors, and structure.

  • Attention training:
    • Mindfulness involves paying close attention to your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
    • It’s about developing an awareness of your surroundings and what is going on within yourself.
    • It improves your ability to be in the present moment, which helps in controlling your attention by not allowing your thoughts to wander.
    • For example:
      • Working memory – Engaging in a memory card game, show certain pictures, say certain words, or lay out objects in a particular order and try to remember. This training aims to build up those areas of the brain that hold onto information long enough to accomplish a specific goal.
      • Mindfulness – To stop and consider how you are feeling (impulse control) or utilizing senses to name things we can see and hear (present in the moment).
