Summer is upon us and many of us look forward to the summer season as a time to relax, unwind, get outside, and enjoy some time off. However, for some, the summer months can bring about a different kind of stress and exhaustion known as summertime burnout.
Summertime burnout is a common phenomenon that occurs when people push themselves too hard during the summer months, trying to cram in as much as possible. This can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed, fatigued, and even depressed as the pressure to make the most out of the season occurs.
One of the main causes of summertime burnout is the pressure to have the ‘perfect’ summer. With social media constantly bombarding us with people living their best lives, it’s easy to feel like we’re not measuring up if we’re not constantly on the go, attending every party and event that comes our way.
Another factor that can contribute to summertime burnout is the lack of routine that comes with the season. With kids out of school, vacations to plan, and a general sense of freedom in the air, it can be easy to let go of healthy habits and routines that help keep us grounded and balanced.
So, how can we avoid summertime burnout and make the most of the season without feeling overwhelmed? Here are a few tips to help you stay balanced during the summer months:
1. Set boundaries: It’s okay to say no to social events or activities that don’t align with your priorities or values. Remember, you don’t have to do it all to have a fulfilling summer.
2. Prioritize self-care: Make time for activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul – Figure out what you enjoy.
3. Stay active: Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and boost your mood, so make sure to incorporate some form of physical activity into your routine.
4. Less comparison: Comparison can lead to negative thoughts and emotions. Try to be aware of your social media activity, unfollow unhealthy accounts, practice being grateful, focus on your goals and priorities, etc.
5. Practice mindfulness: Take time to be present and enjoy the little moments of joy that summer brings, whether it’s watching a beautiful sunset, listening to the birds chirping, or enjoying a BBQ.
6. Setting realistic expectations: To avoid disappointment, look at what is achievable for situations and events, based off your priorities and time.
By taking care of yourself this summer, you can avoid summertime burnout and truly make the most of the season. Remember, it’s okay to slow down, relax, and enjoy the simple pleasures of summer without feeling the pressure to do it all.
By working together, we can create a world where mental health is valued and
all individuals have access to the care and resources they deserve.
