I hope these questions are helpful to you, particularly if you have considered or have any inquiries regarding counseling services.
1. What is counseling?
Counseling (or psychotherapy) is a collaborative process where a trained professional helps you explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to improve mental health, cope with challenges, and reach personal goals.
⸻
2. How do I know if I need counseling?
You might benefit from counseling if you’re:
•Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed
•Struggling with relationships
•Going through a major life change
•Repeating patterns you want to change
•Simply wanting personal growth (you don’t need a ‘crisis’)
⸻
3. What happens in a counseling session?
Typically:
•You talk about what’s been going on in your life
•The therapist asks questions and helps you reflect
•You may learn coping tools or strategies
•Sessions are usually 45–60 minutes
Early sessions often focus on goals and getting to know you.
⸻
4. Is everything I say confidential?
Yes—with a few legal exceptions:
•Risk of harm to yourself or others
•Abuse of a child, elder, or vulnerable person
•Court orders (in rare cases)
Your therapist should explain confidentiality clearly at the start.
⸻
5. How long does counseling take?
It varies:
•Short-term (6–12 sessions): specific problems or goals
•Long-term: deeper patterns or ongoing support
Approaches like Solution-Focused Brief Therapy tend to be shorter, while others like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy may be ongoing depending on goals.
⸻
6. What’s the difference between a psychologist, psychiatrist, and counselor?
•Psychologist: mostly does assessments, can provide therapy
•Psychiatrist: medical doctor who can prescribe medication
•Counselor/Therapist: provides talk therapy (various licenses)
⸻
7. Will my therapist tell me what to do?
Not usually. Most therapists:
• Empower you to move forward with your goals
•Help you explore options
•Guide insight and decision-making
•Support you in choosing what fits your values
Some approaches are more directive than others.
⸻
8. Does counseling actually work?
Yes—research shows therapy is effective for many issues, including:
•Anxiety
•Depression
•Trauma
•Relationship problems
Success often depends on the fit between you and your therapist, along with your involvement.
⸻
9. What if I don’t “click” with my therapist?
That’s normal and okay.
•You can discuss it openly
•Or try a different therapist
A strong therapeutic relationship is one of the biggest predictors of success.
⸻
10. What should I expect from my first counseling session?
Your first session is usually about:
•Explaining confidentiality and policies
•Discussing what brought you in
•Sharing background information (history, relationships, health)
•Setting initial goals
It’s also your chance to see if you feel comfortable with the therapist—there’s no pressure to “open up perfectly” right away
