The benefits of counseling can far outweigh any discomfort encountered during the process – When you are feeling any discomfort that means you are working and making progress which is a benefit.
So what are some benefits and drawbacks with counseling.
Benefits:
-Emotional support: Counseling provides a safe and non-judgmental space for individuals to express their thoughts and emotions
-Coping strategies: Counselors can help individuals develop healthy coping mechanisms – Gaining insight to turn unhealthy habits into healthy
-Personal growth: Counseling can help individuals gain self-awareness, improve self-esteem, and work towards personal growth and development – This type of growth helps with confidence, trusting yourself, and decision-making
-Problem-solving skills: Counselors can assist individuals in developing effective problem-solving skills to address challenges and barriers in their lives
-Improved relationships: Counseling can help individuals improve communication skills and build healthier relationships with others
-Learn various therapeutic tools: Counseling can help individuals gain the ability to change self-defeating thoughts, decrease intrusive and ruminating thoughts, and regulate their emotions
Drawbacks:
-Emotional discomfort: Counseling sessions can bring up difficult emotions and memories, leading to temporary discomfort or distress (But in the end this is a good thing)
-Uncertainty: The effectiveness of counseling can vary depending on the individual counselor-client relationship and the specific issues being addressed (This is why finding a counselor that specializes in the areas of your concern is important)
-Changes in beliefs and behavior: To change belief systems that you have lived by and believe are true, can be scary
-Changes in dynamic (family, relationship, etc.) can be disrupted: Once skills are developed and utilized, areas of your life will get impacted
-Cost: Even when you have insurance, counseling sessions can be expensive because counseling is usually a weekly or every other week consistent appointment
-Time commitment: Regular counseling sessions require a significant time commitment in and out of sessions, which may be challenging for individuals
-Stigma: Despite increased awareness about mental health, there may still be stigma associated with seeking counseling, which can deter some individuals from seeking help
It’s important to weigh these items and consider your personal needs and preferences before deciding to pursue counseling. Counseling does take work both in and out of sessions to be effective.
Let us work together to create a world where mental health is prioritized – Where everyone feels safe and supported, empowered on their healing journey towards wellness.
