Let’s talk self care this month, starting with nutrition since its National Nutrition Month.
National Nutrition Month is an annual campaign that takes place in March to promote the importance of a healthy eating lifestyle. To raise awareness about the importance of nutrition, provide education and resources to make healthier choices, and focus on the role of nutrition in our overall health. It is about gaining knowledge about the significance of making informed food choices and develop healthy eating habits. A well-balanced diet provides essential nutrients that support us and help us thrive.
Here are some areas to focus on:
-Eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. By doing so, you can ensure that you are getting a wide range of nutrients your body needs to function optimally.
-Consider practicing mindful eating, to learn when you are truly hungry. Stop and think if you are hungry, by paying attention to your body’s cues. Limit electronics while eating, to decrease mindless eating.
-Through education begin to develop a balanced, healthy, and nourishing relationship with food that supports overall health and well-being.
-Learn appropriate portion control by paying attention to portion sizes you can help prevent overeating and promote better digestion. Learning to eat until you are satisfied, not overly full. Giving your body 15-20 minutes to let you know if still hungry.
-Drink water, hydration is a key aspect of maintaining energy and your overall body’s functioning such as digestion, nutrient absorption, and temperature regulation.
-Have fun with it such as watch cooking shows, try to make a new dish each month, go to nutrition workshops, attend health fairs, etc.
-Take time to learn about the benefits of different foods, read food labels to know what you are putting in your body, and understand how to make healthy choices while eating out or on the run.
A healthy diet can have a positive impact on your mental well-being, while poor nutrition can contribute to mental health issues. It is important to consume a balanced diet to support brain function and overall mental health. Additionally, certain nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, vitamin D, and antioxidants have been shown to have a positive effect on mood and cognitive function. It is also important to stay hydrated and limit the intake of processed foods, sugary drinks, and alcohol, as they can negatively affect mental health.
Overall, National Nutrition Month serves as a reminder to prioritize your health and well-being by making nutritious food choices. By taking small steps daily towards a healthier lifestyle, you can improve your quality of life. So, take this opportunity to evaluate your eating habits, set wellness goals, and embark on a journey towards a healthier you during National Nutrition Month and beyond.
So, this month I challenge you to consider some of the tips within this blog. Working towards making small changes towards a healthier lifestyle such as meal planning, cooking more at home, and incorporating foods/nutrients you may be missing.
Remember, nutrition is not about a diet plan, losing weight, or restriction. It is about identifying food as fuel for your body, to provide the nutrients to get you through your day.
