The therapeutic process can vary depending on the type of therapy being offered and individual needs. Generally, it involves a variety of approaches that are designed to develop a better understanding of yourself, your emotions and behaviors, and the world around you.
During your sessions, you will typically discuss experiences, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The counselor will help you explore underlying issues that may be contributing to your current state of distress – Working together to develop strategies to reach the goals that were initially identified, changing as needed.
The counselor will typically use a variety of approaches to help you work towards your goals, some commonly known approaches are:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Existential therapy
- Solution focused therapy
They might recommend different types of therapy depending on what is occurring, such as:
- Individual
- Family
- Couples
- Group
Counseling homework is sometimes assigned during and in between sessions, such as reading materials, activities to practice, or writing assignments. This can help you gain further insight into your thoughts and feelings, gain new skills, and practice what you have learned in session.
Generally speaking, therapy can help you gain self-awareness, learn skills to help manage your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, reduce distress, create healthier relationships, and build resilience.
