The first counseling session is an opportunity for the therapist and client to get to know each other, to begin the therapeutic relationship.
Your therapist will likely ask a variety of questions to get to know you and to understand your reasons for seeking counseling. These questions may include information about your background, family, school, job, medical history, relationships, mental health concerns, and any current issues you are facing. Your therapist may also discuss their approach to counseling, therapeutic process, and answer any questions you may have. It is important to be open and honest during the session, so your therapist can better help you.
The treatment planning process may begin during that initial session by considering your goals for therapy, along with discussing how you will work together to achieve those goals.
Finally, this session is also used to determine your availability and any other factors that may influence the counseling process.
