Let’s talk self care this month, since its Sleep Awareness Week, let’s talk sleep.
Sleep Awareness Week aims to highlight the importance of healthy sleep habits and raise awareness about the impact of sleep on our overall health and well-being.
During Sleep Awareness Week, experts in the field of sleep medicine and research share valuable information and resources to help individuals understand the importance of sleep and how it affects their physical, mental, and emotional health.
One of the key messages is the importance of prioritizing sleep as a fundamental pillar of health, alongside diet and exercise. These 3 top self care areas (sleep, diet, exercise) are often considered in counseling because when those areas aren’t being prioritized usually your mental health is impacted. So, it becomes a focus of treatment since one doesn’t truly know how to gauge their mental health until those areas of life are more maintained and healthy.
Here are some areas that lack of sleep can impact:
-Executive functioning such as attention, memory, and learning
-Being able to utilize coping skills effectively
-Perception of situations
-Increased cortisol which is connected to anxiety (cortisol helps regulate many bodily functions)
-Lack of melatonin can impact our mood (helps regulate the circadian rhythm)
Here are tips on how to improve sleep quality and establish a healthy sleep routine:
-Consistent sleep schedule
-Create a relaxing bedtime routine
-Utilize your bedroom only for sleeping
-Try not to hang out on your bed throughout the day, your bed should be associated with sleep nothing else
-Limit electronic usage a couple hours before bed
-Avoid eating before bed
In conclusion, Sleep Awareness Week serves as a valuable reminder to prioritize sleep and take proactive steps to improve our sleep habits. By raising awareness about the importance of healthy sleep, we can empower individuals to make positive changes in their lifestyle and prioritize their well-being. Let us use this opportunity to reflect on our own sleep habits and make a commitment to prioritize quality sleep for a healthier and happier life.
Reminder: Seek help if you are experiencing sleep-related problems.
Let us work together to create a world where mental health is prioritized – Where everyone feels safe and supported, empowered on their healing journey towards wellness.
