Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT helps people accept their thoughts and feelings, and move forward in a way that’s consistent with their values.
My last blog discussed CBT and DBT – Now let’s look at how ACT differs.
What is the difference between CBT and ACT?
- CBT is more goal-oriented with the counselor taking a more directive role in guiding cognitive restructuring.
- ACT is an ongoing daily life process, integrated into your day. It is more of a collaborative approach between client and counselor.
What is the difference between DBT and ACT?
- DBT is more of an educative approach
- ACT is more of an experiential approach
Typical treatment often involves the following 6 components:
- Defusion: Learning to separate thoughts from feelings and actions. Individuals are encouraged to observe their thoughts without attaching meaning to them, reducing their impact on behavior.
- Acceptance: Embracing thoughts and feelings, even the difficult ones, rather than trying to control or avoid them. It encourages individuals to experience emotions fully.
- Self as context: Understanding oneself as a context for experiences rather than identifying completely with thoughts or feelings. It promotes a perspective of observing oneself without judgment.
- Contact with the present moment – To be mindful: Encourages individuals to engage fully in their current experiences instead of getting lost in regrets about the past or worries about the future.
- Values: Individuals explore their core values and what is meaningful to them. Understanding personal values helps in guiding actions and decisions toward a more fulfilling life.
- Committed action: Focuses on setting and pursuing goals that align with one’s values. It includes making behavioral commitments to change and take meaningful steps towards achieving these goals.
These components together increase psychological flexibility. It encourages people to:
-Embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them
-Identify core values
-Adapt to life’s challenges while pursuing a meaningful life aligned with their values
